Chain Form Terminal

See Chain Terminal.

Chain Terminal

Electrical terminals come in two forms:

The latter form was introduced by Premium line in 1954 for our range of plug and receptacle .062 diameter male and female terminals.

Chamfer

Angle on the inside edge of the barrel entrance of a terminal or connector housing that permits easier insertion of the cable into the barrel or of a plug into a receptacle.

Characteristic Impedance (Zo)

Characteristic impedance of a uniform line is the ratio of an applied dynamic potential difference to the resultant current at the point where the potential difference is applied between signal conductor and its ground return conductor, when the line is of infinite length.

Note that the term is applied only to a uniform line. It is an important transmission line parameter that characterizes the line's similarity to some other line, (a connector, e.g.) where a mismatch in characteristic impedance between the system transmission line and the connector implies the latter as a discontinuity creating reflection noise and signal rise time degradation, respectively.

See also Zo, Connector Discontinuity, Signal Rise Time Degradation.

Chassis-to-Chassis

Another term for wire-to-wire or subassembly-to-subassembly electronic interconnect devices.

Chip

Generally, an integrated circuit with all circuits fabricated on one small piece, or chip, of silicon. It may also be made of other materials, and could also apply to discrete capacitors or resistors.

Chip Carrier

High performance, low profile square or nearly square sockets with connection points on all four sides. Chip carriers have become popular throughout the industry as a successor to smaller DIP sockets. They make much more effective use of PCB real estate than DIP sockets do.

There are several styles of chip carriers, including Leaded Ceramic (LCCC), Leadless Ceramic (LLCC), and Plastic Leaded (PLCC). Premium line makes the PLCC style. Our line includes both through-hole and surface mount versions. Chip carriers allow great flexibility in adding, upgrading, and replacing memory in electronic products.

Chip-to-Package Level

The first or Level 0 of the five Levels of Electronic Interconnect Device Packaging. Also called the IC Chip Level. When a chip is inserted into a chip carrier on a PCB, the combined unit is known as a "package."

Cin

Continuous volcanization.

Circuit

A conductive channel through which electrical current flows (in a closed loop termed closed-circuit) or through which light energy flows.

Circuit Density

Expressed in circuits that can be accommodated in one square inch of real estate. The higher the circuit density, the smaller the connector. Connector size is a major design consideration in printed circuit board applications and where equipment downsizing is required.

Circuit Element

A basic constituent of a circuit, exclusive of interconnection.

Circuit Size

The number of terminals/pins in the assembly which represents the number of electrical circuits the connector can transmit/carry.

Circuit Verifier

An assembly that electrically stimulates an item to be tested and monitors for proper response. This includes shorts and opens testing as well as functional diagnostic testing. Also called: analyzer, test set, and tester.

Circular Connector

A Level 4 connector available in two basic styles: with one contact for use with coaxial cable and with multiple contacts.

Circular MIL

A term used to define cross-sectional areas using an arithmetic short-cut in which the area of a round wire is taken as "diameter in mils (.001") squared." One circular mil is equal to pi/4 square mils.

Circumferential Crimp

Final configuration of a terminal barrel made when crimping dies completely surround the barrel and form symmetrical indentations.

Circumferential Separation

Used variously to describe a crack:

  1. In the plating extending around the entire circumference of a plated through-hole.
  2. In the solder fillet around the lead wire.
  3. In the solder fillet around an eyelet.
  4. At the interface between a solder fillet and a land.

Cladding

In fiber optics, a low refractive index that surrounds the fiber core and provides optical insulation and protection of the core.

Clamping Screw

One element of a clamping system that is used in terminal blocks. When the screw is tightened, counteraction forces the clamping yoke upward, compressing the conductor firmly against the current bar. Also called "Cylindrical" connector.

See also Yoke, Current Bar.

Claspcon

A single crimp type terminal which mates to an .093" Diameter Bead Pin, which has been attached to a PCB. Claspcon is a Premium line trademark.

Clean Room

A manufacturing area where the air is filtered and the temperature, humidity and dust particle size is controlled.

Client/Server

An computer system architecture in which one computer can get information from another. The client is the computer that asks for access to data, software, or services. The server, which can be anything from a personal computer to a mainframe, supplies the requested data or services for the client.

Clinched-Wire Through Connection

A connection made by a wire which is passed through a hole in a printed circuit board, and subsequently formed, or clinched, in contact with the conductive pattern on each side of the board, and soldered.

Clip or Interim Clip

A form of clip or holder that accepts smaller connectors coming from various equipment to form one large connector. Used for wire-to-board and wire-to-wire applications.

Clip Terminal

The point at which the hook-up wire is clipped against the connector post.

Clock

  1. The internal system which provides the timing or cycle time constraint which controls the allowed bus transit time for data.
  2. The time window under which data and instructions can be internally processed in a computer. This directly relates to the speed of the internal computer.

Clocking

The arrangement of connector inserts, jack screws, polarizing pins/sockets, keys/keyways, or housing configurations to prevent the mis-mating or cross-mating of connectors. Also called polarization.

Closed-Line Design

A transmission line design with high noise immunity where the signal conductor is effectively shielded (or closed about) by either ground planes or shields, similar to an effective 2-D Faraday Cage design. Some designs are completely 360º surrounded or closed; others are only partially closed. Coaxial cable is an example of a 360º closed-line design.

Close Package

Stacking of two or more PCBs.

Closed Barrel

See Crimp.

Closed Barrel Terminal

A terminal configuration with a wire barrel with an aperature for the wire. Closed barrel terminals are available in strip form or as loose pieces.

See also Open Barrel Terminal.

See also Brazed Terminal.

Closed Base

A design for terminal junction-blocks which is useful in applications requiring single point circuit completion via tip mounted, single and two-sided quick connects.

Closed-Circuit

A complete path that permits the flow of current.

Closed End Splice

An insulated spice in which two or more wires overlap and enter the splice from the same end of the barrel.

Closed Entry

A design which limits the size of mating parts to a specified dimension. Usually used in reference to pin and socket contacts.

Closed Entry Contact

A female contact designed to prevent the entry of a pin or probing device having a cross-sectional dimension (diameter) greater than the mating pin.

Closed Wire
